How I'd break into AI engineering in 2026

The roles that actually exist right now, and a practical path into one.

The fastest way into AI engineering is not to learn every model. It is to get good at shipping one useful workflow end to end.

Start with the role, not the hype

Read twenty current job descriptions and group the repeated skills. You will usually find more demand for solid software engineering, evaluation, data pipelines, and product judgment than for training foundation models.

Build one narrow system

Choose a problem you understand. Add a model only where it improves the workflow, then measure whether it actually helped. Document the tradeoffs, failure cases, and what you would change with another week.

Make the work easy to inspect

Publish the code, a short demo, and a plain-English write-up. A small finished system creates a stronger hiring signal than another list of completed courses.

The goal is evidence: you can find a real problem, build responsibly, and explain your decisions.
